Spaceframes

Spaceframe structures might be defined as mass produced members and connections that are site assembled to form an efficient load carrying structure in which the typical size of the members is small compared to the spans achieved.

Spaceframes may have the form of a double-layered or even multilayered 3D truss system for spanning large distances in two directions. In this case, the loads are transferred in a two-way system as distinct from conventional steel systems of primary and secondary members.

Shell structures in the form of domes, hypars, barrel vaults have been built using spaceframe components. These are often called reticulated shells.
