Arup logo

We shape a better world

We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. We shape a better world.

Founded in 1946 with an initial focus on structural engineering, Arup first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, followed by its work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arup has since grown into a truly multidisciplinary organisation. Most recently, its work for the Singapore Sports Hub has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs that reinvent the built environment.

Arup brings together broad-minded individuals from a wide range of disciplines and encourages them to look beyond the constraints of their own specialisms.

This unconventional approach to design springs in part from Arup’s ownership structure. The firm is owned in trust on behalf of its staff. The result is an independence of spirit that is reflected in the firm’s work, and in its dedicated pursuit of technical excellence.

Oasis logo

Having successfully completed the multi-million dollar Grand Pavilion for Major Projects Victoria and Multiplex, Oasis Tension Structures has the resources to undertake projects of any size and complexity.

Oasis is a multi-award winning business and is the current ACASPA 2011 Overall Winner. Oasis also holds the IFAI 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award for tension structures less than 600sq.m. These, together with numerous other awards, are testament of Oasis's commitment to excellence over a journey lasting many years which continues today.

Interestingly, the history of Oasis can be traced back to its founder, Darryl Thomson, when more than thirty years ago as a young engineer he set out to develop the application and methodology for the use of shade fabric in tensile structures. He achieved great success developing an industry that spawned the everyday use of shade fabric with offshore processing and hardware store product lines that is part of the industry today.

But his heart lay elsewhere; his interests lay in applying his knowledge to producing unique designs to suit specific architectural, recreational and industrial applications. Oasis Tension Structures was founded in 1992 as one of five divisions within Gale Australia. Oasis commenced fabrication of shade sails in 1992 and has produced more than 10,000 since that time.

In 1995 Darryl purchased the division and along with business partner and fellow civil engineer, Peter Byrne, founded Oasis Tension Structures (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1996.

Since that time Oasis Tension Structures has continued its growth and has a developed a dedicated professional team of designers and managers who can assist with all aspects of tensile engineering from conceptual design through to construction and maintenance.

Oasis has undertaken work throughout Australia and has the flexibility and experience to work on international projects in locations including the United Kingdom, North America, South East Asia and the Middle East.

Tensile engineering is still a young and vibrant industry exploiting the advent of new materials, modern fabric technology and associated engineering techniques.

From its beginnings working with knitted shade fabrics, we have developed our experience and expertise and can now offer structures fabricated from fully coated woven materials such as PVC coated polyester weave and PTFE coated glass weave fabrics.

Oasis is dedicated to develop our ability to offer new forms, new materials and new solutions in tensile engineering. We have developed expertise to offer insulated roof structures incorporating insulation blankets and captured air pockets to provide tensile roofs with excellent thermal performance and we have developed our capacity with ETFE films to offer pillow structures.

ExpertiseOasis specialise in the Design and Construction of tension membrane structures.

From tensile umbrellas to the largest free form structure in Australia, Oasis has the ability to offer a complete range of shade fabric structure solutions to the commercial market.

Our professional staff has the expertise and ability to offer service and advice through all stages of a project starting with concept development and continuing through to detailed design and documentation, procurement and fabrication and finally installation for shade projects of all sizes.

Our experience with a variety of materials means we can tailor solutions to suit your requirements and your budget.

magryn logo

Magryn and Associates Pty. Ltd. is a small structural and civil engineering consultancy based in Adelaide, South Australia, and undertaking work throughout Australia. We offer design services and expertise in civil and structural engineering, with a specialty in the area of coastal engineering.

We have permanent professional engineers and technical officers/drafters on staff, and specialist engineers contracted as required.

We undertake a large number of designs for shade structures of differing shapes, sizes and configurations. These range from simple shades to large architectural designs, to specialized designs such as barrel vault shades.

Shades may be in shadecloth or impermeable PVC membrane.

Generally clients like their shades to be as "free" and "unrestrained" as possible; however, all shades have the common problem that they develop very large internal forces. The balance and restraint of these internal forces requires careful consideration, and all of our shades are computer modelled in three dimensions to reflect their actual performance in the field.

Shade structures are generally designed and fully documented, ready for council certification and construction.

Sioen is a world market leader in coated technical textiles and technical apparel.

We are a textile solution provider, offering tailor-made solutions to our customers. As a producer of yarns, woven and non-woven fabrics, technical textiles, fine chemicals and protective clothing, we offer our customers a completely vertically integrated solution to all their fabric needs. Sioen has the entire production process under one roof, from the yarn, raw fabric and pigment pastes, to the coating and production of technical apparel. As a leader in our industry we pride ourselves on our ability to find imaginative solutions to the challenges and ever-changing concerns and demands of our customers, the marketplace and all our stakeholders https://sioen.com/en

Sioen tensile architecture membranes are low wick, anti-bacteria treated, PVDF coated, flame retardant and are built from high tenacity technical yarns.

Our unique state-of-the-art machinery allows to coat back and front side of the fabrics in one run, avoiding stops in between the various layering and lacquering processes. Thus, the product is not exposed to unfavourable thermal or mechanical shocks. This results in unbeatable quality of our products. The Sioen coating process provides an extraordinary product stability, flat stretched fabric with better overall distensile properties and short lead times.

Sail Structures Logo1

Sail Structures was formed in 1988 in conjunction with Port Douglas Sailmakers and initially manufactured high quality yacht sails. Using our Sailmaking experience we began to manufacture tensioned fabric membranes for architectural use when the industry was in its infancy.

Being one of only a handful of suppliers in the country with the skills to fabricate these speciality products in the early 90s we quickly gained a reputation within our industry for our ability to supply these first class structures in a quality second to none.

As the industry rapidly expanded over the next 20 years we lead the way by constantly researching and developing our products. Using the latest technology available such as CAD Software specialised high quality fabrics and hardware, modern patenting systems and outstanding staff we now specialise solely in the high end architectural membrane market.

The results speak for themselves – we are recognised as the market leader in North Queensland supplying basically every high profile project in the region. Many of these have gone on to be judged award winners in State, National and International Awards. We are recognised as the only award winner to manufacture and install shade sails in Cairns. We are also the only fully qualified sailmakers that manufacture and install shade sails in Cairns.

We manufacture all our tensioned membranes and shade sails using the latest cutting edge technology from a modern purpose built sail loft and now service clients through Queensland as well as interstate and overseas.
